There are multiple problems that printed cruising guides have. The
two biggest ones are that the data is out of date the moment they are
printed and advertising-tainted-content tends to make everything sound
nice and inviting. Carry around an old guide for a few years and see
how many phone numbers are no longer correct. We got tired of finding
the information so out of date.

Then, seriously, everyone realizes that the cruising guidebooks out
today get a major portion of their revenues from advertising from the
marinas mentioned, right? There are some books that don't use this
practice, but the majority of them do. It's easy to tell - look for
the nice, full-page, color pages designed by the marinas themselves.

So think about it - how often do you think you're going to see a
negative comment about a marina in a guidebook? And how many
anchorages to you think will be mentioned?

Haverstraw has 3 stars in ActiveCaptain. That's not terrible but it
tells me that it isn't a stellar facility. A link to Haverstraw's

Let's check the ActiveCaptain marker for Front Street Marina in
Newburgh. It was given 2 stars with 3 reviews. That tells me you
need to be careful. Then here's one of the reviews written almost 2
years ago:

-----------------------------------
Captain: Shon Barnett, Kiawah Island, SC (151)

...The dockhand warned us away from going into town because it isn't
safe. The staff were helpful even though they seemed green.

Want to bet that you'll never see information like that in Waterway
Guide?
