GL: Hudson to Erie to Oswego

We did the Hudson R and Erie Canal last year. We spent a week on the Hudson
(about the same time as it took Henry Hudson to make it to Albany). In New
York we stayed at the Newport Marina (Jersey side) which is only a block from
the PATH station into Manhattan, but it was quite rolly. Haverstraw Marina
was a bit over-rated in the cruising guide. There was no grocery store near
by (as advertised), the swimming pool was full of garbage and the docks are
aluminum which makes them very bouncy and noisy at night. Newburgh gets a
nice write up in Dozier's Waterway Cruising Guide but was way over-rated. Yes,
the waterfront has been redeveloped, but the town is a slum. The harbormaster
warned us not to go more than 2 blocks from the marina at night. Next up was
Saugerties. The Marina is a bit run down but people are very friendly and
drove us into town for groceries. There is a nice anchorage at the end of the
creek, but it is only big enough for 2 or 3
 boats.
After that we wnet to Catskill...a short run, but nice town. You can walk
from the marina into town and marina has a heated swimming pool, clean laundry
and restrooms. Thomas Cole's home is here and worth a visit. He was the
founder of the Hudson River School of painters.

In Albany, we stayed the Albany Yacht Club -- very friendly. We toured the
State Capital buildings which are very interesting and they have an nice art
museum. Its a quick taxi ride from the Y.C. into town and you can buy your
Erie Canal pass at the Y.C. Captain Bob's guide book is indespensible for the
Erie.

I understand the recommended cruising guide for Lake Ontario is the Port
Cruising Guide and Lakeland Boating puts one out for Lake Ontario (both
available on Amazon.com). Richardson's is out of print.

Dear List:

We are considering a trip up the Hudson this June/July to Toronto. We draw
5'9" and have an 18'4" air draft with the antennae and mast down. Can
anyone give advice as to (1) how long the trip up the Hudson and through
both canals will take as a practical matter (trawler speeds); and (2) is
there a return trip potential that avoids the Erie given our drafts? Also,
any recommendations on guide books for this trip?

Thanks.
