Has anyone ever heard of a
fiberglass trawler be beached in the mud for the winter? Does it make any
sense at all? Or is the idea completely crazy?
Boats in portions of the UK lie on mud berths for extended periods. Actually
soft mud or sand will provide good hull support. Most boats intended for
drying out type moorings have twin keels but single keel boats can take the mud
successfully. You must take care to protect exposed parts like rudders and props
which might inadvertantly bear weight. If your boat has a single keel along
the centerline, use sheer legs to keep it upright. Also don't forget to
winterize.
