There are reams of information on this topic in the archives of the Trawlers
and Trawlering list as well as the Grand Banks Owners Forum and likely the
MTOA list as well. Search and yee shall find.

I have personal experience in this process, having helped a friend
alternately stack one engine on top of the other to remove two tanks in
order to replace them with four.

If mine ever need replacement my personal preference will be to leave my
twin engines alone and cut out the four existing tanks and replace each with
a series of thin stacked tanks all plumbed together. I saw some pictures of
a GB with this done, and it has many advantages. There is apparently a
fellow on the west coast who will fly in and do the job lickety split.

Having a single engine will make removal and reinstallation simpler, but you
will most likely find the measurements of the existing tanks exceed those of
the available exits requiring the tanks to be cut up into easily handled
pieces.
