I guess the "first time" is different for everyone. I bought a 120V "Super
Snorkel" rather than a Brownie (can't remember why - I did check both and a
couple of friends bought the SS too).
I have done a lot of snorkeling but no scuba. I read the instructions
carefully and read about scuba on the Internet. Talked with some diver friends who
were helpful after realizing I was only going down 8 feet and didn't want to
take a scuba course. I hope I never have to use it, but because we do ocean
passages in a single engine boat hundreds of miles from anywhere, we really
must have one, IMO.
You will need a wet suit and a couple of weights. Have fun!

>I have a Brownie's hookah unit, though I have only used it in
a few feet of water, inspecting the prop. But it did bring to mind my first
dive experience with scuba tank, in a motel pool with a friend. I went in
the
water, and started breathing incorrectly and failed to get enuff air into my
lungs and ran out of air and made a panic surface. After my friend showed me
what I was doing wrong, I did just fine and really enjoyed the experience.
The moral of the story, get some schooling in diving before you buy... it's
very important.
