FWIW, we passed through Hell Gate southbound this morning at dead low
tide. Saw no less than 10 feet on the north leg, giving green 89 a wide
berth (probably 20 yards) and then moved over about the same distance
from the red side where we did see 6.0 feet for a fleeting second when
we were abeam the temporary red, otherwise the depth on the south leg
was around 8.0 feet.

Talked with a tug boat captain a couple of hours later heading north
pushing. He said they time their arrival at Hell Gate to coincide with
mid tide, and can carry good water all the way north from Jacksonville,
Florida, (he didn't say how far north) by departing Jax three hours
before low tide there (Jax).
