Joe,
You've already gotten good advise on guide books, but if you are leaving from
the Keys and heading up the coast, I'd strongly recommend leaving from Ft.
Lauderdale. Its almost a full day's travel south of Palm Beach. The free
ride you will get from the Gulf Stream current will more than make up for the
extra distance. Do the math exercise and you will see what I mean. Also, you
will most likely have a more favorable wind angle, which should serve to make
the trip more comfortable. If you leave from Palm Beach you will have to put
more right rudder in the trip which frequently puts the wind on the nose.
Also, I really like the Explorer charts of the Bahamas.
