We are new to the concept of using a dingy and purchased a 30' power
catamaran with twin Suzuki outboards last fall. The PO had used the boat
for a trip to the Bahamas where he used the boat as a base for spear fishing
and accommodations. He used a WM 10' Zodiac inflatable with a 15HP 2 stroke
motor for diving and getting around while at anchor and on the hook. He
basically towed the dingy as he used it frequently and there is no
convenient way to stow it on the transom or foredeck while inflated. The
dingy is a compact folding version and weighs 112 lbs and fits into a
nice padded storage bag with quite a bit of effort.
I do not have sufficient room between the engines to stow or mount it
transversely across the transom. I have considered mounting it with the bow
of the dingy resting on the transom allowing for better following and a
shortened overall length while towing. This may adversely affect the boats
handling in weather and it would be no time to deflate and stow it if it
becomes a problem. My question is about entering locks and marinas with a
dingy in tow. It would seem to me that a dingy afloat in a lock would be
very susceptible to currents and one more thing to keep track of. As for
entering marinas or harbours is it possible to hand off the dingy to a dock
master after announcing you have one in tow? We want to experiment with the
process and know that there are many on the list that discuss dingy issues
and may have recommendations for us. Thoughts about towing with and without
motor and fuel tank on board the dingy would be greatly appreciated also.
