We have two Garmin 12XL (older units) that we did the Loop with and
hooked up to our Lap Top Computer with computer navigation. Worked
great. We also have a Garmin 76 which is easier to read. Both are
hand held units, but we mounted them on RAM swivel mounts (also use
the for the depth finder, VHF radio and RADAR). The marine units are
not at all like the automobile / truck units -- many more functions
like way points, etc.

Check out article # (12) JUST TOYS OR GREAT LOOP NECESSARY on our
website under the Cruising Articles section for more information.

I would also suggest that you contact your local unite of the United
States Power Squadrons <www.usps.org> as they have an Excellent USPS
University 2 hour seminar on the Use of GPS units or attend a
Trawlers & Trawlering seminar by Bob Sweet on this subject.
