GL: Water cops and Lectrasans

A few weeks back there as some discussion on this list about water cops
stopping boats and checking to ensure that sewage wasn't being
discharged overboard. I asked how they would react to a system using a
Lectrasan (which certainly can pump directly overboard without
treatment) and whether it would process the dye the water cops were using.
Yesterday we got our answer. While cruising on the ICW through New
Smyrna Beach, Florida, we were hailed by two water sheriffs, told to
continue our course and speed, and one swung aboard from their skiff. He
identified himself and that he was going to inspect our sanitation
system. He then asked how many toilets (I'm not sure he called them
heads) we had aboard, and I told him. He then asked what would happen if
he dropped some dye into the heads and flushed the toilets. I replied
that the dye would go through a Lectrasan for each head, and then be
pumped overboard. He checked with his partner on the skiff, and then
held up his thumb, and said (in effect) that we were using a system that
was better than the city, and thanked us for our time. He hopped off
Sanderling, then they departed.
We had seen them stopping a sail boat just before they stopped
Sanderling, but a 50+ foot cruiser went by without being stopped.
Hope all water cops are as well-versed in the operation of Lectrasan!
