Craig:
We are natives of the Lake Superior area. The northshore is pristine and
beautiful, but wild, often harsh, and facilities are few, far between,
and modest. The American northshore between Thunder Bay and Duluth has
few places to hide and that is a necessity on Gitchee Gummi. Along the
south shore, there are the Picture Rocks National Lakeshore near
Marquette, MI. Not been there, but hear it is beautiful. Isle Royale is
again beautiful, but also wild, harsh, with many treacherous reefs. There
are two types of people who go there: (1) hardcore fisherman in
powerboats and (2) hardcore environmentalist types who show up on
sailboats and ferries. The latter disdain and barely tolerate the
powerboaters. The Keewenaw Peninsula area is rugged, but beautiful.

Probably the MUST-see area is the Apostle Islands National Seashore in
the vicinity of Bayfield, WI. Twenty two Islands with numerous old
lighthouses, sea caves, hiking trails, nice beaches, wilderness, museums,
and the very quaint and touristy Bayfield area. VERY nice area. Of
course, Duluth/Superior is at the western end of the lake and has many
attractions and charms. Duluth is unique as an American city. In the
Bayfield area is Pike's Bay Marina which is the premier marina on Lake
Superior. VERY nice, protected, and beautiful. Almost brand new also and
prices are quite reasonable, especially if you belong to BoatUS. In the
Duluth/Superior area Barker's Island marina is the best place to go.

The best time to traverse Superior is in July, though August would be
second best. June tends to be cold and rough. The color season is
brilliant in autumn, but you probably will want to on your way down Lake
Michigan by then.
