The absolute best inlets will be the commercial ship inlets. For the safest
passages, it's usually best to wait for good weather and plan your trips
between those inlets.
ActiveCaptain lists hundreds of inlets along the coast between Norfolk and
Savannah - both minor and major. Some of the minor ones listed haven't been
dredged or charted since the 1980's and should most certainly be avoided.
The details for each of the inlet markers has between 1 and 3 pages of
information. The ship inlets are very well described.
Inlet conditions change quickly with different weather conditions. The
exact same inlet can be silky smooth one day and scary-as-hell the next.
