GL: Canal speeds

On the New York Canals, including the Erie Canal, the speed limit in the
artificially dug sections is still 10 MPH.  On sections of canal that are
natural rivers, the speeds are as high as 45 MPH, with each section being
posted with different limits.  

This is done to reduce the bank erosion
from fast moving boats on the hand dug narrow sections.

Naturally, all
docks, all walls, and all anchored boats require a no-wake speed as you pass.
Common courtesy dictates slowing a bit for oncoming boats and during passing.
Dredges and construction boats & barges also require no-wake speeds and it is
best to radio them for instructions as you approach.

We were on the
Erie Canal last summer and I seem to
recall that parts of the canalized
Mohawk River had
speed limits of 40mph.  Of course, travelling on a
slow
trawler, I didn't pay close attention to those
signs, nor to the 10mph signs
either.
