Tom & Claire,

It really doesn't matter how far you travel offshore while cruising along the "Jersey Shore". Anything from 200 yards to one mile would be just fine. The thing to watch is the wind direction. If the wind is "offshore" traveling closer to the beach would be better. Far less fetch to stir things up. If the wind is "onshore" it really doesn't matter.

I would highly recommend, however, you try and take some time in the Jersey area to relax and get a feel for cruising in NJ. I would highly recommend taking a side trip and go in the Manasquan Inlet. Once inside take the Manasquan River take the Point Pleasant Canal and then onto the northern areas of Barnegat Bay. As long as you stay in the northern portions of the bay your draft should be no problem. Towns such as: Point Pleasant, Brielle, Bay Head, Mantaloking, Brick and Toms River offer great opportunities to "resupply", shop, dine and get to meet the fabulous people of New Jersey. Quiet walks along the beach, an ocean swim, fabulous dining and entertainment are readily available. Except for places like Wildwood, Atlantic City and Seaside Heights, the "Jersey Shore" area offers some of the greatest, most serene and cleanest beaches on the East Coast. Don't miss this opportunity.
