Break up the trip by going from Cape May to Atlantic City (Garrison
Bight marina). THen a long run to NYC. A bail out is Manasquan Inlet.
Currents a few miles offshore are mostly the same as further out. I
run about 1.5-2 miles offshore mostly to avoid the small fishing boats
trolling and at anchor. The currents are mostly going with the wind
but not strong. You will get some tidal current approaching the
Hudson. You can bail out at Sandy Hook or Atlantic Highlands if you
want to time entering NY harbor. and to time the tide going into NY.
There is traffic in the harbor but really not a big problem. Make a
call on Channel 13 if you think you may be in someones way. Keep a
steady course and the fast movers will just go around. The big Staten
Is ferries are the ones to watch out for. Like most ferries they have
a route and they think they own it.
Coming down the Delaware Bay you MUST time the tidal currents. See
Skipper Bob for the time to leave Chesapeake City to make it to Cape
May. You can bail out at Cohansey River midway down. The chart makes
the entrance ominous but it is deep and straight in. We hit a big
squall and had to ditch out there for the night. Delaware is a bigger
hurdle than offshore NJ. If there is a W wind you can run close to
shore for minimal sea.
We did the downeast route in 2006 if you need any info. You have
Cheryl Barr's book I hope.
