GL: Local cruising and fuel consumption

When you consider that yesterday I took delivery of an $800 heat exchanger
for the stbd engine, and spent an additional $70 on the hose and parts to
reroute the seawater supply line to the stbd shaft packing, the idea of
slowing on such a short trip to save less than $200 sounds dopey. But I was
just sticking to the subject of fuel savings. For a trawler, it makes sense
to slow down on really long trips like a look, but for this trip and the
post I sent, it was more an intellectual exercise, wasn't it?

Rich wrote, " Running at the slower speed and NOT anchoring for a 10-hour
rest each way
(as well as avoiding open water during T-strm activity) uses only 90
gallons
($406) saving another $63 over and above the $120 we'd save by avoiding a
two-part running at hull speed (30%)."

I used to always say that nobody ever bought a boat because they wanted to
save money. But after reading Rich's post, now I'm not so sure!
