If you are a halfway-decent mechanic you can reduce your expenses
considerably by removing the injection pump yourself and sending it to a shop. The cost
of a repair manual and a few special tools pales by comparison to mechanic's
charges these days. Even if you don't want to invest in a timing tool to
reset the injection timing you have saved much mechanic time and pay to have it
done it can be worthwhile; if there's travel time involved it can be a
substantial expense. Some pumps, like the one on our Lugger, can simply be
reinstalled without re-timing.

It costed me 1500$ for the starter, oil change and a few other things in
April. A few weeks later, I noticed I had a slow leak on the fuel pump.
Total bill for the rebuild (and a few other things, they always find
something else) : 3800 $. And I have a very basic engine, Cummins 5,9.
A fuel pump for my gasoline car is less than 250$. It takes less than 2
hours to take it out, take it in.
Why is it we don't talk about the astronomic costs of parts and mechanics
for diesel engines ? It's suppose to be sooooooooo reliable, but the minute
something goes wrong, the bill fits for a Rockefeller budget.
Conclusion : in 2 months, I spent more on "accessories" around the engine
than I did for fuel in the last 4 years.
