I've read with interest all the banter about bio-fuels and complaints about the high price of fuel. The bio-fuel debate seems like 'much ado about nothing'. The practicalities of making fuel in your garage seem to be a lot of nonsense. I mean, how many people are really going to do that just to go cruising and The Loop. Com'on, really now!! As for the price of fuel .... get use to it.
I am surprised no one has brought up the use of a reasonably sized sailboat to do The Loop. Let's make a few assumptions: (1) at least 25% (probably more) can be done "under sail", (2) sailboats, under power, are most fuel efficient getting between 8-10 mpg. Therefore, a mere 4,500 (give or take) miles would be done under power. Assuming 9 mpg, that would result in the purchase of 500 gallons of diesel. At $6.00 /gallon my simple math comes up with a total fuel cost to do the entire Loop of $3,000. Not too bad, IMHO.
Am I missing something here? KISS .... Keep It Simple Stupid. Why even waste the time to discuss bio-fuels? Is anyone really going to do it, let alone make enough to do the entire Loop?
Greg
