Loopers in the Hudson Valley should have an excellent opportunity to see 4th
of July fireworks this year. Most communities will have their festivities on
the 4th, usually in waterside parks, so a boat anchored offshore has one of the
best seats in the house. The exception, as usual, is the Palisades Park
Commission, which is having a gala pre-4th celebration on June 27. The location is
Bear Mountain Park, just south of the Bear Mountain Bridge. There is
reasonably good anchoring on the west shore of the river, near the park. The river flow
reverses every twelve hours so if you plan to stay overnight, set two
anchors.
The Palisades Park fireworks show is one of the best on the river. The
setting is spectacular. The river cuts through the Appalachian range at this point.
The view of the river and the Bear Mtn. Bridge has graced millions of
postcards. The fireworks add an exclamation point. Festivities start at 6 pm although
parties aboard anchored boats start much earlier.
