Since I brought up the issue, I figure I should give an update:
We are in Savannah working our way north (slowly):
-Kilkenny Marina (S. of Savannah): $1.25/ft +$2.50elec. very friendly, but remote to anything.
-Savannah City Dock: $1/ft. Use plenty of fenders, as the occasional (pleasure) boat throws a wake. We've been at worse and the dock is in good shape. Only 15 amp power, but our AC (12K btu) runs so we don't mind. The city staff are great. People are friendly. It is the perfect place to visit of Savannah. You are right in the downtown tourist area. Getting grocieries is easy. Use the free airconditioned bus to go to Kroger and then ride it back (they run every 20 minutes). You are right on the riverwalk, so if you don't like be a tourist attraction it might not be for you (we like chatting with people so it's not a problem).
- Cooper Marina (Charleston): We haven't been there yet (and I won't speak regarding the quality of the marina), but were considering it for a months stop. Prices have skyrocketed. Skipperbob showed $10/ft. The official website showed $12/ft. When we called, we were informed it was $15/ft (50% in less than a year seems excessive). We won't be stopping there. We might stop for a day or two to see Charleston (at a marina with better access to downtown), but the money we spend over a month will be going to another city. I do not mean this as something vindictive, but I hope the city officials and local buisness are aware of this. We would be spending money at grocery stores, ship stores, restaurants, car rentals, etc.. We have family that is planning to come down to visit and would be staying at local hotels and spending money also. I figure the local ecomony is going to lose $5-6,000 due to a goverment owned marina squeezing as much profit as possible out of boaters. Maybe
Charlestons economy is so good, this isn't a big deal.
