We came down last fall and from St. Louis to the Ohio, it was running 4-5 mph with higher speeds in some areas.
What is your top speed? While the current is going with you. At the Kaskaskia River, I wasn't sure we were going to be able to make it out of the channel as the current was sweeping us by. We top out around 8mph.
I don't want to discourage you, but is there a reason you want to via the Mississippi?
-If the river system is just a means to an ends and you want to get to your destiantion quickly without concern for convienience, it's probably a reasonable option with good preperation.
-If the river system is a major part of the reason for going, I would recommend the Tenn-Tom route. Currents are much less. The barge traffic is minimal by comparison and there are plenty of places to stop for supplies and to see the area.
If you do go, please provide updates to the group as there is far less info on the Mississippe south of the Ohio.
