GL: Trailering

Years ago, my late husband and I owned a 26' Erickson sailboat which we bought
because it was the largest, most comfortable sailboat that we could tow. My
son, an engine designer for Ford, told us exactly what we'd need to tow the
boat and it was a GMC Suburban...but NOT an 'off the lot' one! It had to have
special cooling system, special engine and special transmission to tow the
weight. Sooo...be sure you know the capacity of your vehicle! The Suburban got
9 miles/gal going up hill, down hill, towing or not towing! The other issue
was, the boat was 9'3"wide, over the 8' limit. Since it was a sailboat with a
keel, it sat HIGH on it's trailer so in order to measure the width, a ladder
was necessary. We never got a special permit and we never got caught! Nobody
really cared and today there are many more wider loads on the highways than
there were then.
