GL: cheap fuel

Using 4 - 5 gallon fuel jugs and a 6 gallon outboard tank, I can fill up with
two trips to the local gas station (probably not practicle if you have a 1000
gallon tank). Assuming reasonable generator use, this gives me about 250-350
mile range (2 - 18 gallon built in tanks and a 6 gallon outboard tank, plumbed
with a 3 way valve plus the 5 gallon fuel jugs.).

Once or twice a month we usually get a rental car so transport isn't a big
issue. A few places we have been close enough to carry the jugs to the gas
station by walking.

I normally won't do this at a marina with a fuel dock as that would be direct
competition, but most months, we stop at 2-3 places where it isn't a big deal.
I don't ask or broadcast what I am doing to the marina, but I don't hide it
either (if they were to ask me not to do it at a particular marina, I wouldn't
do it)

Savings typically range from $0.50-1.00 per gallon and the fuel is probably
fresher.

Occasionally, I do have to buy marina gas, but I still use the fuel jugs so I
can just walk them over to the fuel dock rather than moving the boat. Never
had a marina question me on it. I have a siphon device and it is easy to reach
the fuel fill with a place set the jug, so transfer is easy and clean. Based
on this, I figure any questions of the risk of spilling gas are based on
protecting against competition or because the insurance company said to do it,
rather that any real risk.
