Before the moderator sends this thread off of the list for being off topic I
would like to respond.
We do both. We have a 32 ft sailboat in Canada's North Channel and have
sailed up there for about 20 years. WE are getting ready to bring it south.
We also have a 36 ft 5th wheel, and a used 33 ft 5th wheel for sale.
I do think the depreciation on an RV is greater when buying new, 20% when
one drives it off the lot. Lots of used diesel trucks available and they
should hold their value better than a car. There are tons of used 5th wheels
out there and no where near the quality one will find in any decent boat.
There is a lot of crap when it comes to RVs. There are also a lot of ones
that will be able to "do the job."
Comparative terms:
Live aboard means Full Timer One in a boat, the other in an RV.
Gunk holing means Boondocking--As to this topic, we love to do both. We have
been in the North Channel for 20 years and still have some gunk holes we
want to try out. Yes, we stop at Wal-Mart when we are making tracks in the
RV, but we also have anchored is some state harbors on Lake Huron when
making tracks up and down the lake. Have you ever tied to some old barge
along the rivers? There is a ton of Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land out
west. Free camping in the desert. We also have volunteered at state parks to
get a free campsite for a month.
Dock fees vs Camping fees: All varies as to where you are. Dockage in the
North Channel runs $1-2 per foot per night, $10 per foot per month. Nightly
camping fees run from $20 per night to $60 and monthly from $300 to $700 in
Texas.
Fuel--I get 12 mpg towing the trailer, 8 mpg when I run the engine in the
boat.
For the person who is trying to decide, you have obviously found at least
one of the boating lists. There are a number of RV lists on yahoo groups,
and you may want to try a couple of those, especially the search term
boondocking. Also feel free to contact me off line.

I would warn against the assumption that a boat will go up in value. If it
does great, but I would do the analysis on the assumption it will lose
value. This is not an investment vehicle.
