GL: Need real-world experience cruising in Canadian waters

The only time we saw any marine police was when we were in our dinghy.
 They told us that we needed a flashlight, bailing bucket and a
floating throw line (e.g. polyprop).  I believe that these are not
required by US laws although sensible to have aboard.  You can buy an
inexpensive kit at any Canadian boating store that meets the
requirements.
We did have a radio, GPS, and life jackets.

The police like everyone in Canada are very nice and they let us go
with a warning.
