After months of development (with record setting snowfalls in Maine and
nothing to do!) we have released the largest update to ActiveCaptain ever.
Almost 4,000 new "inlet" local knowledge markers were added. As you'd
expect, these markers show and document all of the ocean inlet access
points. They also show and document thousands of harbors and destination
areas. Most of the markers contain significant amounts of text description
explaining navigation and other items of interest about the area.
As with any marker, Captains can add to the information. If there is
something that you know about a harbor that shouldn't be missed, the inlet
marker is the place to put it.
All totaled, there is more than 2,500 pages of text information in these
inlets. It's like having a dozen guidebooks! We cover both coasts, the
Gulf of Mexico, the Great Lakes, and the island territories. We're
finishing up Alaska right now. It has added many megabytes to the size our
databases and we think it greatly increases the value of the entire web
site.
The official announcement is going out on Monday but the whole idea of
ActiveCaptain was born from the T&T and GL lists and I wanted to announce it
here first. All of the inlets are live on the web site right now.
As always, access to the web site is completely free and without any
advertising.
