Hi  Ralph -
 
The  rule of thumb is not more than 30 shaft diameters between bearings. The 
length  of the bearing is pretty much set by the manufacturer, but can be 
slightly  reduced (cut off) to suit with a proportional reduction of service  life.

How LONG is the cutless bearing supposed to be if the shaft tube is  long, 
such as in our trawlers?
