I got the foregoing query and thought it has relevance to this thread.

The shaft must be removed. Ok , I guess someone "could" remove the back 
bearing without removing the shaft ,I just would not want to try!!!!!

Not that hard. Get the coupling off
Take the wheel off
Oil the shaft

Put two big pipe wrenches on the shaft and (You and a close friend) start 
twisting and moving it back.
 Careful to not place the wrenches on the bearing surfaces.

NOTE that just because a bearing surface is well worn you need NOT get a new 
shaft. Have it welded up and turned down on a lath. I have had this done 
twice during the 23 yrs with this boat. Not all of the bearing surfaces just 
some of them. I have twins and each shaft has 3 bearing surfaces.

Again, my experience and YMMV.
