Having been through this recently myself, I will emphatically  
recommend that the first piece of essential equipment that you  
purchase, right now, today, is Nigel Calder's "Boat Owners Mechanical  
and Electrical Manual" (3rd Edition). This covers this subject  
extremely thoroughly and in easy to read fashion. You have got some  
good snippets of advice here, but this book will give you the whole  
story and then some. You will find yourself returning to it again and  
again.
