BETTER THAN DUCT TAPE???
New Products for the Mariners Tool Kit
John used to say that he could fix almost anything with Duct Tape, a
Wire Coat hanger, PC-7 or PC-11 epoxy, Marine-Tex and a few basic tools.
Well, modern technology has produced a new and improved tape which
threatens the market domination previously enjoyed by duct tape.
The new wonder tape is a silicone tape sold under the trade name
Rescue Tape and is manufactured by Harbor Products, Inc. in Carson
City NV. Website: <http://www.rescuetape.com> Tel: 877-847-2628.
Rescue Tape works by an application process consisting of stretching,
overlapping by 50 percent, and self sealing & bonding. The tighter
the wrap, the quicker and stronger the bond. The product boasts that
it has a permanent seal; is waterproof and air tight; has 700 psi
strength; resists 500 degrees F or 260 degrees C; and also insulates
8,000 volts. It also resists fuel, oil, acids, solvents, salt water,
road salt and ultra violet rays. For best results 3 to 5 layers are
recommended and 3 to 5 inches on each side of a major repair (gas
line, water hose, etc.).
The product comes in a wide range of colors for a wide range of
applications. We bought several colors a year ago and used it to
whip our dock lines indicating various lengths so that when we need a
bow, stern, spring line of a given length we can simply grab one
based on our color code. It saves uncoiling and recoiling several
lines when tying up at different marinas.
With its many marine repair capabilities, we now have a whole
container full of Rescue Tape in several colors. But, we still keep
a roll of duct tape just in case!
OTHER NEW MARINE REPAIR PRODUCTS ARE:
(1) Atomic Putty. A super epoxy cement which you cut to quantity
needed and kneed to activate. Seals leaks even under water.
Available from many catalogs such as Get Organized and Taylor Gifts
and eBay. Goggle Atomic Putty for more information. Stays where you
put it, can be molded to any shape and hardens like steel. It can be
sanded, painted and even drilled. Repairs ceramics, wood, dry walls,
fiberglass and concrete.
(2) Future Glue. Similar to Krazy Glue, but waterproof and in a
bottle with an applicator brush. Website: <www.supergluecorp.com>.
Instantly bonds metal, rubber, most plastics, aluminum, ceramics,
china, hard & soft wood, pottery, jewelry, fingernails and more.
Works on dirty, greasy services and resists high and low
temperatures. In a personal experience, it repaired a broken depth
finder bracket which has been under water for extended periods over
the last two years.
We must add that we do not have any connection with any of these
products or their manufacturers but have found them helpful in the
marine environment.
