GL: how to register a boat

Fred,

Many states have no location requirement and some of them, Rhode
Island for example don't even have a sales tax for boats. RI will print your
California home address right on the RI registration and mail you renewals to
CA. Only thing, you have to watch out that you don't keep your boat in a
different state for more than typically 90 days, else that other state may
require you register with them and pay sales tax there.

If you're looping,
then you'll be moving around enough to avoid this.

Subject: GL: how to register a boat

We live
in Calif. and want to buy a boat somewhere along the loop and do most of the
loop. I checked with the ca. DMV and we cannot register a boat that is not
physically in Calif. Is it possible to register a boat in another state when
you are not a resident of that state and you will not be keeping the boat in
that state for any prolonged period of time? How is this problem resolved?
Thanks for any advice. Fred Flinn
