GL: how to register a boat

We live in Calif. and want to buy a boat somewhere along the loop and do most of the loop. I checked with the ca. DMV and we cannot register a boat that is not physically in Calif. Is it possible to register a boat in another state when you are not a resident of that state and you will not be keeping the boat in that state for any prolonged period of time?How is this problem resolved?
