GL: Heavy Duty Wench

Take a look at GOOD AUTOMATIC WINDLASS. Far superior to Lewmar products
that are sold so often. Lewmar windlass warranty will be VOID if you
allow the anchor line to remain straight to the windlass because it will
tear up the clutches. Lewmar specifies that their windlasses are anchor
deployment and retrieval systems. They say on their web site "Windlasses
are not designed to hold high loads while a boat is at anchor. When the
windlass is not is use and the boat is at anchor, the anchor rode should
be secured using a chain stopper or attached to a load bearing point
such as a cleat."

Not so with GOOD windlass. Call and ask the company. I know of as
charter fisherman who uses the GOOD windlass every day to anchor over
wrecks. He NEVER ties it off even in bad weather. The company completely
supports that use of their products. That tells you that the design is
superior to the others. I installed one on my fishing boat when I
started wreck fishing and it was great.

You might want to try one of those East German models they produced back
in the Cold War days. My Irish model just gives me this evil look and
then points me to the bow. (Appologies if there are any Heavy Duty East
German Wenchs listening in.)

Snip:
During our Loop trip and other cruising we found it much better to have
a heavy duty winch installed to pull the anchor instead of a "heavy duty
wench". In any event, referring to my wonderful life-mate Carol as a
"heavy duity wench" would likely have caused at least a mutiny even if
she could pull up the anchor :)
