I received several off list questions about how we identified good
motels and restaurants on the Loop. The answer was really quite
simple. We requested an AAA TripTik showing all the towns along each
stretch of the Loop. Since most towns in the Eastern half of the US
were established adjacent to, or within a short distance of navigable
waterways, the TripTik is a very useful guide. This is particularly
true about the Hudson Valley, the Erie Canal, the ICW and Chesapeake
Bay. AAA recommendations are updated annually and list motels and
eateries within each community. Additionally they provide information
about local attractions and events. Many of the motels are located
along the waterway and some provide boat dockage for no charge if you
rent a room.

If you are an AAA member or a member of one of their associated motor
clubs, simply plot out a make believe driving route along a roadway
bordering the waterway. Then ask for the full driving trip information
package. You will receive a box loaded with maps, guidebooks, and a
TripTik showing a mile by mile guide. You can also do it on the
internet at <www.AAA.com>. This service alone is worth the nominal AAA
membership fee.
