GL: Rideau Canal Depth

Marty and list:
We did not have a low water experience with the Rideau. We transited in
July and never found less than 7 feet of water in the channel. We stopped
at Ottawa and moored in two locations along the 1,000 foot wall with over 6
feet. Don't know if the water level changed in a month, but this must be
the case. We also did not experience any problem with the locks at the
sills. July was a rainy month in the area so maybe that had something to do
with the different experiences. Just want to pass on our experience in
July.
Sincerely,

We finished the Rideau this June. On a Krogen 42 we draw approximately 4'
8" in fresh water. We bumped 4 times in the middle of channels on the
Rideau. We also scraped rock once entering a lock. The lockmasters
frequently flooded the lock so we could get over the sill (water was pouring
off the sides or the gates). When we arrived in Ottawa we found we could
not tie up to the Ottawa wall. This is a 1,000 foot wall. The first 500
feet (from the locks) had been dredged to 6' for the tour boats. The balance
of that 500 feet was taken by 3 pleasure boats that had arrived earlier.
The second 500 feet was only 4' deep at best. We were forced to move on and
did not finish the Ottawa flight of locks until 7:30 pm.
