Marge is right about rentals being spotty in some spots.
Last year I arrived at Demopolis and was told that the next lock upstream
was to be out of service for three days.
I was able to rent a car from the FORD dealer there and drove home for a
couple of days. When I returned I learned that the lock repairs were
accomplished within 24 hours and the lock reopened. But it was a good break
in a 5 week delivery.
In Scottsboro,(Tennessee River mile 378) , I think the car rental is still
available but you might want to check with the marina: www.goosepond.org
There is usually a courtesy car available at the marina for local use.
If you need a ride to the airport, (Huntsville ~50 miles; Chattanooga ~ 70
miles; Birmingham ~100 miles) you will probably best arrange with someone
local to get you there and back. I am often around and might be able to do
so.
If you want to fly out of Huntsville/Decatur Airport, I think you will find
that Decatur's Riverwalk Marina is more convenient than Huntsville's Ditto
Landing.
In Chattanooga, Island Cove Marina is fairly close to the airport.
An e-mail to the marina will likely tell you all you need to know about
airport & rental access.
I am somewhat reluctant to speak authoritatively about current availability
of rental or courtesy cars because these things change more frequently than
the weather.
The weather in the Tennessee Valley has been amazingly consistent this
summer. But it does vary from HOT to HOTTER and from DRY to DRYER.
