There is actually a solution to that problem available that still allows use
of automatic inflation!
Mustang now makes two type of automatic inflatable life jackets, the
traditional bobbin activated ones, and the newer hydrostatic release
inflatable life jackets. The hydrostatic release is imperious to rain, fog
and spray, and instead requires submersion in more than 4" of water. They
are intended for use in high spray environments, and are specifically
designed to get around the premature inflation problems the bobbin activated
inflatables have had.
You can see one at:

I've had one of the hydrostatic inflatables since last summer, and I'm
pleased with it. There is no annual maintenance as there is with the bobbin
units, just a requirement to replace the actuator every five years.
