GL: Western Erie Canal - Place to stop near Rochester

William,

Fairport is 10 bucks a night. Generally it's safe except in past
years the local hoodlums have been untying boats and letting them drift in the
night. The dock master and also the bridge tenders go home at night and
nobody is watching, no matter what they tell you.

Last summer, I watched 5
hoodlums break into the boat next to me, and they were surprised to find the
owner hiding on board waiting for them! He captured all 5 of them, and called
the cops. During the cop investigation, one of the little thugs tried running
away, and ran right into another cop, who promptly administered some dock-side
justice with his night stick. I'm willing to bet the problem has been solved!
Still, it's always good to have a cable and a pair of padlocks to permanently
attach your boat to a cleat at night. I do this at ALL ports. Home Depot
has what you need for about 20 bucks.

Fairport is a great place to stop for a few nights. The
wall is free and as I recall power and water is available. You are right in
town with access to restaurants and shops. Fairport is a picturesque town with
all the services you will need.
We left our boat there for about a week in
2002 during high water in May when sections of the canal were closed. Although
we did not have any concerns in leaving it there, before we left it, we
informed the gentleman who acts as dockmaster, and the bridge tenders agreed
to keep an eye on it.
