Engine hours for maintenance purposes should be based on run time at the
rated speed and power for one hour; clock hours are out of touch with reality,
as piston speed is the determinant of wear and max oil life, etc. So if an
engine has a continuous rating at 1800 rpm and is run that way, a clock hour and
an engine hour would be the same; if you ran at 900 rpm, you'd record only
0.5 hours. There are hour meters available which will show real hours based on
rpm, as opposed to others which switch on and off with the key and are
simply glorified clocks.
