Engine hours for maintenance purposes should be based on run time at  the 
rated speed and power for one hour; clock hours are out of touch with  reality, 
as piston speed is the determinant of wear and max oil life,  etc. So if an 
engine has a continuous rating at 1800 rpm and is  run that way, a clock hour and 
an engine hour would be the same; if  you ran at 900 rpm, you'd record only 
0.5 hours. There are hour  meters available which will show real hours based on 
rpm, as opposed to others  which switch on and off with the key and are 
simply glorified clocks.
