For those coming down the Illinois, then the Mississippi and up the Ohio and
Cumberland: Both the Angelo Towhead and Cumberland Towhead were debris free
when we anchored in them a few days ago and there was little current in
them. There were no barges in them either and the anchorages were quite
peaceful and idyllic. The Kaskaskia Lock and Dam was a great place to tie
up and again, debris free and very peaceful. The Little Diversion Channel
looked great as we zipped past at 14 miles an hour and reports from those
that anchored there said it was a peaceful and quiet anchorage. There are
many barges backed up behind Lock 52 on the Ohio and some were aground in
the channel: at 8.5 feet. The congestion in the fleet staging area at the
mouth of the Ohio where it joins the Mississippi was impressive. Working
tows tended to ignore hails, while those actually under way in the channel
would respond. The area by the left descending bank is where all the tows
are parked and it is often hard to tell who is parked and who is moving out
of parking.
We are happy to be out of the rivers and into lakes. The Cumberland was
spectacular and had few tows in it.
Got to go and anchor out here now.
