Bob asked...
am looking for some information in regard to favorable winds to cross Lake
Ontario, Kingston Canada, to Oswego, New York. Any and all information in
regard to direction of wind as well as the speed would be greatly
appreciated.
Dennis replies...
Conventional wisdom says less than 10 mph forecast, preferably from north
to variable. Worst case is from south and west. Winds nearly always
increase in late morning to early afternoon and build during the afternoon.
If comfortable with leaving in the dark, and the forecast is light and
variable, you can get to Kingston by early afternoon, even in a slow boat.
We've made the crossing several times at night without radar and had no
problems. The main shipping channel is shortly after leaving Kingston the
there is little other traffic once away from shore.
