When it is run hard, the carbureted 454 has a hot spot in the left rear cylinder (looking at the front of the engine). It is due to lean fuel distribution back there, and can burn through the head gasket into the water gallery.
Check the crancase for eveidence of water, and the plug for appearance indicating poor combustion.
The injected 454 is less prone to this problem, but still is worth checking.
Head gaskets are relatively easy to replace.

Hi All,
I have been running the boat recently, checking the systems as best I can, and
found that we are using, loosing coolant in the port engine. By the way the
engines are 454 Crusader's. I have checked the bilge, and see no signs of
coolant, but there is some water there. I plan to remove all the water next
week, and then run the boat to check for leaks. The engines ran at the same
temp. on Tues. for about 4 hrs, but when I checked the level this morning I
was down about 1 qt. Is there any obvious places I should be checking, or
looking for ? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you all,
Ken Tucknott
ps. how do I post this to the T & T list without 'cross posting' ??
