Fred,

Take Power Squadron or Coast Guard Aux. courses.

Charter a number of times in different boat types and sizes,  and
different areas -- Chesapeake Bay is a good place to start.  Try Blue
Goose Charters (Baltimore) where you will get outstanding instruction in
handling a trawler.

Don't worry about the Loop untiil you know what kind of boat you like and
then  find one. Cruise it for a few months or a year to get the kinks out
-- yours and the boats.  Then plan your trip.
