Absolutely--leaving the boat, we turn off any non essential power--both 120
and 12 volt--also close the thru hulls. A boat is far different than a
house--and the consiquences are far more dire. Fires, dead batteries, and
water intursion can happen mighty fast--and there are multiple places where
this can occur.

As for engine room checks--when passagemaking we do it about every 4 hours--a
walk around the engine room--check temps (these days with an IR
therometer)--look at hoses, belts, thru hulls, wiring etc...

Same for the rigging on our sail boats--light at night and a quick look up the
mast etc, as well as the deck rigging.
