You're right that getting a MOB is difficult, especially if he is
incapacitated. A swim platform ladder will most helpful is the MOB is
able to climb up himself. Trying to pull him up otherwise is like lifting
a walrus.
As several have pointed out, recovering a person from the water can be a
daunting task, especially if any sea is running.
I know of one local occurrence where a 300 pound jet ski operator went in
the water and could not get back on his ski. A good friend of mine went to
his aid, and even with three adults on his boat trying to get the MOB over
the two foot gunwale, they could not. My friend's description of the
incident fit to a T the description above of "lifting a walrus".
They finally solved the problem by carefully towing the MOB at very slow
speed (and well clear of the prop), into shallow water where he could get
his feet on the bottom.
MOB recovery is serious business. Prior planning and actual practice drills
are required to pull it off successfully.
