If you have the right tether, there is no need to carry a knife to cut free
(assuming you don't drop the knife just when you need it most!).

These tethers are made just to solve the problem you are talking about. With
the snap hoop attached to your safety harness, if you really need to cut
free, you just grab and pull the red release.
I've used that type of tether for many years now whenever I go offshore -
thankfully, without ever needing to use the release for real.
