  I am a single hander also and I attach my knife to my PFD so that I can cut free of the boat if necessary.  Also, a long floating line atttached to the stern might give you a greater chance of catching the boat if you are not attached.  
   
  I have an interesting question...why would one whizz over the side in such conditions anyway?  Use a bucket ... it might save your life.
