Isolation transformers are an excellent technological approach to AC
electrical systems on boats *if* they are designed into the system from the
start.  Due to their size and weight, they can be very difficult and
expensive to retrofit to a boat which did not include it in its original
design, and particularly on boats less that 40 ft or so.
