Charles,
The western Erie has about 15 1/2 feet bridge clearance. This may
vary by rainfall and other factors. You can ask the lock and bridge tenders,
but they don't actually know for sure and are frequently wrong, even though
they sound like they are sure.
Pictures of nearly everything on the Erie
Canal are here:

Any further details, feel
free to email me.
The Welland Canal takes giant freighters, so there's no
clearance problems there. They do REQUIRE 3 crew on deck, so if it's just you
and the admiral, plan on hiring an extra deck hand for the trip. Ask around
at marinas near either end of the Welland.

( More) Planning for the summer.
Boat is in
Geneva, NY. We will do the Erie between Buffalo and back to
Geneva either on
our way to the Trent Severn or on our way back fr that area
by way of Lake
Huron.
We need local knowledge on what to expect in addition to the low
bridge
clearance. We can get under that problem!!!
The second leg would
be onto Toronto from Buffalo , of course this leg
includes the Welland
Canal.
Any info would be appreciated.
