GL: Tipping Mechanics

See previous emails about tipping dock hands. Same thoughts apply.
I have a hard time tipping a guy who gets $40-75/hr. Its just not the
same as a waiter who gets min. TIP wage (which is below normal min.
wage).
I had a computer/networking business for over 12 years. Never got a tip
ONCE. Never expected one either. Worked nights, weekends, holidays etc.
Coming in "on my day off" is a personal choice that a service person
makes in order to satisfy the demands of the job, take care of his
customers (which he values), and satisfies his own personal desire/need
to increase his earnings. He also ought to consider that many marine
mechanics work SEASONALLY and if you don't work more days than normal,
at the end of the season, you will end up with less money than others.
Its part of the nature of the seasonal service business.
Should all trained craftsman receive a tip? No.
Mechanics shouldn't ever expect a tip.
Staying late or whatever else may be the personal effort to ensure the
job is done right and the customer is satisfied is THE AMERICAN WAY, or
at least, it USED TO BE. Its an obligation on the part of the service
provider. Its simply what I consider THE NORMAL effort that any worker
should provide. Less than that, keep on walking.

Greetings Again,
I was just involved in some discussions with a couple of mechanics and
they
asked me why boaters are no longer tipping a mechanic, providing they
did a
good job. They wonder why boaters don't even tip when the mechanic
comes in on
their day off or stays late to make sure a boater is taken care of. I
told
them I would ask the group to see what each of you come up with.
Thanks,
